What's Next for George Soros and Soros Fund Management?

Soros Fund Management, the highly regarded firm founded by hedge fund pioneer George Soros, may have taken a substantial hit when Lehman Brothers (Other OTC: LEHMQ.PK - News) went under in September. Soros had opened a 9.5 million share stake in the now collapsed investment bank during Q2, and Bloomberg estimated that Soros' hedge fund may have lost -$120 million when Lehman failed.
Soros was also heavily invested in commodity names this year, and many of these stocks were among the most volatile in the market, running up sharply by mid-summer before skidding lower after peaking.
Though considered a hedge fund pioneer after starting one of the first such funds in 1973, in recent years, Soros has focused on philanthropy and activism. Always vocal, Soros is predicting dark times for the hedge fund industry he helped found, saying in a recent speech, "In my estimation, (the industry) will be reduced in size by anywhere between half and two thirds."
Soros has turned much of the control of Soros Fund Management over to his two grown sons, Robert and Jonathan. However, the firm's moves are still closely watched. The fund's holdings have generally been quite eclectic, recently including names like fertilizer firm Potash (NYSE: POT - News), discount retailer Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT - News), oil giant ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP - News), coal producer Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE: ANR - News), integrated energy company Hess (NYSE: HES - News), and airline JetBlue (Nasdaq: JBLU - News). The rest of Soros's top holdings are available at tickerspy.com.
Given Soros's track record, it will be interesting to see how he was positioning his portfolio at the end of Q3.
By the end of this week, the Soros will report his end-of-Q3 holdings, and curious investors will be able to see how he was positioned for October's market carnage. Investors can be notified exactly when Soros's holdings become available by tracking the firm at tickerspy.com.
Pro portfolio performance is based on institutions' top-15 holdings as disclosed in quarter-end filings with the SEC. Pro performance does not take into account additional holdings beyond the top 15 nor does it include positions that are not required to be disclosed by the SEC. As such, Pro portfolio performance should be considered an approximation and not a precise record of how an institution has performed over time.
