Tennessee Vols have 4 in the Super Bowl -- not bad for homeboys

This season's version of "the ultimate game" is Sunday, and we have broken down the rosters by where the players went to college and high school.

Peyton Manning went to high school in New Orleans and is one of four former Tennessee players in the Super Bowl.

(We admit it: We used the "ultimate game" reference so we could bring up one of the great sports quotes of all time. Iconoclastic Dallas running back Duane Thomas was asked before Super Bowl VI about playing in the ultimate game. Thomas' response: "If it's the ultimate game, how come they're playing it again next year?")

Anyway, here is a look at the makeup of the Colts' and Saints' rosters.

College backgrounds

Half of the 120 schools - and 10 of the 11 conferences - who play FBS football will have players in Sunday's Super Bowl.

The Big Ten and SEC lead the way with 16 alums each. The Big 12 is third with 14, followed by the ACC with 11, the Pac-10 with 10, the Big East with eight, the Mid-American with seven, the Mountain West with six and Conference USA and the WAC with one each. The only FBS conference without an alum in the big game is the Sun Belt.

In addition, 10 players whose alma maters play FCS football will be in the Super Bowl; there also will be three Division II players, a Division III player (Indianapolis' Pierre Garcon) and one player who went to college in Canada.

Tennessee has four alums in the game, the most of any school.
