I Asked Robert for a link to the eDigital Patents yesterday and he sent me the following email.

Thank you for your e-mail, Larry. Our five granted patents (5,491,774;

5,742,737; 5,787,445; 5,839,108; 5,842,170) were assigned to the corporation

as a part of the patent process. The assignee name on four of the patents is

Norris Communications, now known as e.Digital Corporation. The assignee name

of the fifth patent is Comp General Corporation, a then-wholly owned

subsidiary of Norris Communications. We own 100% interest in all of our

granted and pending patents and trademarks. The granted patents can be

viewed on the website of the United States Patent and Trademark Office at:

www.uspto.gov. We will release more information about our intellectual

property and partnering efforts in future company communications. Thank you

for your understanding and continued support.

Best regards,

Robert Putnam

United States Patent 5,491,774

Norris , et al. February 13, 1996

Handheld record and playback device with flash memory

Abstract

A record/playback device for use with a removable, interchangeable, flash memory recording medium which enables extended recording comparable with tape cassette dictating equipment. The device includes a housing, a microphone element, control circuitry and a switch mounted on the housing for selecting desired functional operations. A receiving socket is coupled to memory circuitry associated with the control circuitry and is configured for electrical coupling with a flash memory module adapted for receiving and retaining recorded digital information for storage in nonvolatile forme.

United States Patent 5,742,737

Daberko , et al. April 21, 1998

Method for recording voice messages on flash memory in a hand held recorder

Abstract

A solid state digital hand held recording device having a multifunctional switch assembly. A printed circuit board including a microcontroller electrically coupled to switch terminals operates to control the processing of sound into electrical signals and store said signals on a digital recording medium. The switch assembly actuates electrical signals coupled to said microcontroller thereby activating a sequence of actions (a program) stored within read-only memory device. A plurality of programs can be activated to instantaneously begin recording a message, verify the integrity of the recording medium, and index a message being recorded for rapid recall.

Daberko July 28, 1998

Operating system including improved file management for use in devices utilizing flash memory as main memory

Abstract

A method of memory management for a primary memory created from a non-volatile, long-term storage medium, in particular flash memory, which enables direct manipulation of data segments stored therein. The data segments of a single file are typically not stored contiguously in relation to the order in which they are stored and subsequently recalled, yet the method enables recall in the logical order in which the data segments were created. This method is particularly useful for flash memory which has the characteristic of not being able to overwrite data in memory without first erasing previously recorded data. The method comprises the minimum steps of dividing the primary memory into equal size blocks, each block being the smallest amount of data which can be read from or written to memory in a single read or write operation. A cache memory the size of at least one of the read/write blocks is then coupled to the primary memory and provides temporary storage space for data being written to and read from primary memory.

United States Patent 5,839,108

Daberko , et al. November 17, 1998

Flash memory file system in a handheld record and playback device

Abstract

A record/playback device for use with a removable, interchangeable, flash memory recording medium which enables noise dampened recording of voice data and CD quality stereo recording of music data. The device includes a port for receiving a flash memory module which can record data according to industry standard formats to enable the transfer of data to and from personal computers through swapping of flash memory media. Alternative forms of data input and output also include implementation of a barcode reader and an infra-red transceiver for the transfer of data to and from the device.

United States Patent 5,842,170

Daberko , et al. November 24, 1998

Method for editing in hand held recorder

Abstract

A method and system for editing messages within a recording system includes a handheld recorder having flash memory and a plurality of memory address pointers for storing messages. The flash memory has a plurality of sequential memory blocks, each memory block has a plurality of memory locations, and the messages are stored as message segments. The plurality of memory address pointers stores an ordered sequence of addresses of said message segments within the flash memory. Upon an edit point being selected within a message at which the message is to be edited, the edit point corresponding to a first location within the message defining an end point of a first message segment, an edited message comprising a second message segment is generated. The second message segment is stored in a second memory block and the plurality of memory address pointers are altered to insert the address of the second message segment, and the message segments in the flash memory are played by accessing the corresponding addresses of the memory segments contained in the plurality of memory address pointers so that the message segments are played sequentially. A message fragment may be inserted into a message, deleted from a message, or all of the messages may be deleted from the flash memory.
