Recently we predicted that some IFE company would develop an iPOD-based IFE system and have on several occasions suggested the use of the clever product/technology onboard - after all, passengers do. Well, we got a nibble in the form of an email (below) and we think they are developing (have developed) a portable, hand-out, IFE solutionbut we are not sure. We were unable to Google any product validity and it is too early for April Fool jokes, so, you be the judge?
``G`day I am pleased to announce that an Australian firm, Longtail VOD, has developed the first self-contained personal IFE management system, designed to manage carrier-supplied iPod and PSP on-board. Our enabling technology comes in the form of a mobile docking station, which allows up to 96 devices to run all day, concurrently, whilst on-board. Programming is automatic, updated fresh to each device prior to flight, providing passengers with the latest news, sport and high quality widescreen entertainment available. It delivers a strong competitive advantage to carriers with routes that include short-haul, high value business commuters. Weighing just 12kg, the docking station can easily be stowed as carry-on luggage, or housed in-situ at the terminal. Either situation requires no installation, draws no on-board power, and is EMC compliant.
Originally developed in Australia as a high quality ``whole of craft`` complement to an all business-class airline, this ultra-light solution guarantees unified deployment across all types of short-haul aircraft, as all components are self-contained in a featherweight, standalone passenger kit that allows for either handheld / traytop use in-flight. We offer a combination of device options using iPod and PSP, both of which can be programmed with a comprehensive line-up of licensed TV programming including ABC news, sport, and weather, the ASX finance and US market wraps updated throughout the day, and a variety of video channels including SportsWorld, the Food Lover`s Guide, Australian festivals, destinations, fashion, etc.
The iPod offers a phenomenal of storage for additional multimedia programming, including dozens of up-to-the-minute video podcasts, carrier service information, and destination-specific video. The PSP, while effectively limited to ten hours of video per flight, provides other features suited to longhaul / leisure such as a larger 16:9 widescreen, DVD-type playback using UMD video, and of course PlayStation games. This clever Australian invention opens the floodgates to the real world of on-demand digital entertainment, with a flexible, scalable means to add value, in-line with today`s expectations. A comprehensive leasing plan is available that covers all equipment, maintenance, device security and customised live content. Bottom line: 150 hours of news, sport and entertainment delivered to each passenger for less than a bottle of water.
