Simple answer: They tried that and it didn`t work. They`ve tried building their own devices for sale by others, and that didn`t work. They tried building and branding their own and that didn`t work. We`ve been all these places before.
However, they`ve seen a degree of success with the digE platform. IF (note big IF) Wencor wood (!) have just gone with it and overcame the control factor, and marketed aggressively (they haven`t IMO), the story would be different. But that product and its success has served as a spring-board. That`s the direction they are obviously running in now - enhance the heck out of it so it can serve/support a myriad of potential markets (using purely EDIG IP with no Wencor infringement concerns).
