A very similar appeal process is used in the game of Cricket - DRS (Decision Referral System), where players can appeal the decision of the on-field umpires, by referring to the off-field 3rd-umpire, who has access to better technology (video replays, hawkeye, snick-o-meter, infrared hot-spot, etc). Ditto for tennis.
