TEAC IFE finds favour aboard vip aircraft

TEAC is featuring its VE-801DC DVD Digital Video Reproducer and Airtrack system at this year`s WAEA Conference and Exhibition.

The company says that the VE-801DC is designed for corporate and business jet aircraft. ``This system has been used in head-of-state and vip aircraft,`` said Al McGowan, TEAC`s director of marketing, in-flight entertainment.

It is capable of playing back two languages simultaneously to allow greater audio flexibility for multi-national venues. The unit also supports both PAL and NTSC video sources and S-Video and composite outputs.

The system is DO-160D qualified, which TEAC says ensures that it will operate in extreme temperature conditions and periods of vibration. It can be remotely controlled by a serial interface using either RS232, RS 485 (Protocol provided by and compatible with MAS systems) or serial IR controls.

The VE-801DC is logistically supported by TEAC ensuring configuration management parts supply and service.

The company`s Airtrack system was also on display. It has been developed in partnership with Lufthansa Technik and uses high-resolution digital satellite imagery to create flight views. It can also store and play over 220 hours of digital video content.

``Airtrack is similar to Airshow - it is a moving-map product,`` said McGowan. ``It was originally developed for the military market but business jet operators have shown a strong interest in the product.``

TEAC states that the product features highly detailed 3D images. ``The 3D maps are almost virtual reality: When you look at the map from a certain altitude, any mountains, lakes and other geographical features will all be in perspective. So, when the aircraft increases or decreases in altitude, the features on the map also change.

``Also, aircraft owners can digitally represent their own aircraft on the map. It will display the owner`s individual aircraft type and livery, for example.``

The user of the system can enjoy other features. ``It can be controlled by the passenger, so they can watch a 3D perspective for the entire trip if they want to,`` said McGowan.
