"A 'platform' is some combination of the above. And, software is probably 98% of the product. "
FWIW...
hardware + software = firmware.......for specific issues......or ASIC.....application specific integrated circuit.....by the 1000's for all types of issues to be controlled.
What e.Digital does ....pairing down to "micro-controller 21" or "control circuitry 21"...supported by a ROM or flash entity that will hold specific proprietary code, configurable and upgradeable... depending on memory utilized, outline the use of proposed firmware. Where by implementing a separate dedicated power source for all peripheral device issues(firmware)..micro-controller 21 energizes by coupling or decoupling the firmware to the power source on an as needed basis.
What e.Digital does is break free of expensively designed processors that normally energizes device circuits directly through its referenced power source.
The referenced power source for e.Digitals micro-controller 21 or control circuitry 21 do not directly energize device(firmware) circuits.
The separation is a distinct "on" and "off" to device issues(firmware)....where e.Digital maintains the leaking issues directly relating to the doping of silicon P/N on its side of the fence.
Whatever leaking of CMOS waste there is, they have come up with a way to tourniquet the problem of parasitic electrical problems, by keeping it controlled within their specific arena. There by, saving power that would normally be lost in the periphery, such as vcc/vpp charge pump circuits for flash memory use.
