Apple Scoops Up Solar-Powered Devices Patent
Running your iPad or iPhone on the sun may be a future reality, if Apple decides to execute its recently awarded patent describing solutions for charging a number of devices, including mobile phones, laptops and tablets. Specifically, the patent deals with converting the power from a solar panel in order to meet the power demanded for consumer electronics. It utilizes a voltage converter to confirm available power that is then converted to recharge batteries.“The voltage converter includes an input capable of being coupled to a solar power source and an output capable of being coupled to an electronic load, such as, for example, a portable electronic device,” the patent reads. “The voltage converter is configured to monitor or detect an amount of power drawn by the electronic load at the output of the voltage converter. In response to the monitored power drawn, the controller is configured to control the voltage converter to adjust further output power provided to the electronic load. As a result, the output voltage from the solar power source is maintained within a predetermined range.”Solar power was recently used to power a hand held device, but creating a stability has been an issue due to the amount of power demanded.According to Patently Apple, this is the fourth patent for a device related to solar power, but the first for this extensive range of devices. Apple has yet to release a solar gadget, but is clearly interested in offering the option to their customers. The company plans to take the environmental approach by phasing out toxic chemicals and using recycled aluminum whenever possible. The company released a line of solar batteries last year that the company claims are longer lasting and more energy efficient than standard batteries.
