Perhaps DM never intended to bring a witness at this time, but wanted to sneak a peek at the opposition's cards, so to speak, to be better prepared if/when this goes to trial. At least they know who Defendants will call to rebut their witness.
It doesn't seem that presenting expert testimony at a "Markman" hearing is necessary to the objective.
