Starting from the premiss that every case has a settlement value, and knowing the fact the 95% of law suit are disposed of by way of settlements, you can decuce that there is process of developing the expertese to assess "THE VALUE" of each case that trial lawyers know about and use to do what you are inquiring about...
It is complicated question and articles, and books are written about it, and courses abound for lawyers, to learn about it. But, there is no substitute for "experience" in this area of the law.
In fact the ENGLISH system of Jurisprudence recognizes this difference by having "Scrivners" and "Barristers" who are the guys wearing wigs and shoing up in Courts...
All you need to know that DM has a record of being a "Trial Lawyer" they know how to play the game of squeezing blood from a trunip, and their record shows they are darn good at trying cases...
