SAMSUNG OneNAND is a highly reliable embedded memory targeted for both consumer electronic, and next generation mobile phone market. With SAMSUNG's accumulated NAND flash technologies over the last decade, SAMSUNG designs an ideal single memory chip based on NAND architecture integrating SRAM buffers and logic interface.
SAMSUNG OneNAND takes both advantages from high-speed data read function of NOR flash and the advanced data storage function of NAND flash.
SAMSUNG OneNAND™ is the most innovative concept of storage solution in the world. Progress of 3G Mobile devices such as smart phones requires more increasing amounts of memory to download contents and execute multimedia applications with higher bandwidth. Also, phone users want the applications or media files being executed in their phone at vary fast speed. To satisfy those memory hungry device's demands and today's abundant multimedia environment, more high density memory and the enhanced performance for next-generation handsets is demanded.
Most cell phones have traditionally used NOR flash. NOR flash has its advantage of fast read speed, but lower density, slow program speed and higher price compared to NAND flash was a burden. In order to build faster and more powerful smart phones, designers needed to consider implementing a combination of NAND and DRAM as memory architecture, but this did not fully resolve the problem, since NAND flash does not have internal booting feature, and software ECC caused performance degradation.
SAMSUNG's new OneNAND™ product with an integrated NOR interface and embedded ECC logics makes this transition to new memory architecture easier. It allows phone designers to change current NOR flash to mass storage of NAND flash without any chipset changes but just in consideration of small modification for their software.
Furthermore, OneNAND™ boosts up data read speed by using two SRAM buffers to reach to the read speed of NOR flash, while keeping up the program speed of NAND flash. OneNAND™ gives system designers an absolute memory solution that satisfies all the market demands in a single device for code execution and large data storage.
Enhanced PerformanceSAMSUNG OneNAND™ is a single-chip comprising a NOR flash interface, NAND flash controller logic, NAND flash array, and up to 3KB of internal BufferRAM. 1KB portion of this internal BufferRAM is used for automatic boot code loading, a BootRAM, and the other 2KB, separated in two pieces of DataRAM is used for Dual-buffering. Dual-buffering is the unique feature of OneNAND, which boosts up the read and write performance. This level of integration enables OneNAND™ to achieve up to 20MB/s of read performance to optimize application functionality.
Featuring a 54MHz synchronous interface also helps remarkable read performance of 20MB/s. Its faster read speeds resolves the delay time in copying the boot code from the NAND flash to the DRAM and executing applications on-demand.
OneNAND™ has a powerful Multi Block Erase feature that erases many blocks as many as 64 blocks at the same time. This makes program operation more efficient by performing background erase and garbage collection at shorter time. Multi Block Erase is performed simultaneously and takes only 4. With fast program speed of NAND-based design and this Multi Block Erase feature, OneNAND™ achieves 2.8MB/s of program performance.
For example, continuous multi-shot capability on digital still camera is limited to the DRAM buffer size. OneNAND™ program speed enables program into Flash memory with less amount of RAM buffer overhead. This provides continuous, multi-shot capturing of 5-Megapixel images and real-time recording of VGA resolution video.
Finally, for longer battery life of mobile applications, internal NAND flash core and peripheral of OneNAND™ operates on 1.8V, which makes more efficient on power consumption.
Wide Selection of ProductSAMSUNG's OneNAND™ flash memory targeted for consumer electronic market is available in 128Mb and 256Mb. They support both FBGA and TSOP package to accommodate variety of needs and support growth for the future. Also, operating temperature varies from extended (-30 °C to 85 °C) and industrial (-40 °C to 85 °C). Cost EffectiveOneNAND™ basically uses a large block structure of NAND technology. This is more cost effective than low density of small block NAND. Since OneNAND™ contains SRAM and some logics as well as NAND core, one might think its size would be a little larger than the conventional NAND, but this is not always true. With its large block structure, OneNAND™ has a merit of its chip size compared to small block structured NAND flash. The size of OneNAND™ becomes larger when compared with large block structure NAND flash, but this difference is negligible.
