John-

The green vegetable comment/hint came from this article in AirExpress, not from RP. This was back in May 2004. Just an FYI.

Hot Topic: Portable VOD Players

Portable Media devices that are currently attracting a lot of interest in IFE as an alternative to embedded IFE — especially in single-aisle aircraft —will be an important topic at the July 13-14 meeting of WAEA`s Digital Content Management Working Group (DCMWG) at the Universal Hilton in Universal City.

The WAEA TC hopes to have an airline that is either using a portable media solution, or is trialing one, to present on their experience with the system. In addition, the DCMWG will field a panel to discuss the content delivery issues surrounding portable media systems. Are they secure? Do they qualify for early window content support? Why won`t the players just walk off the aircraft?

In the first portable media system in IFE, which has been flying on Alaska for less than a year, the device, APS’s digEplayer, is the system. But there are rumors of a next generation system of portable media in IFE that uses a very different kind of Content Delivery Network in which the devices are secondary to the system, and supply chain automation plays a big role. Those who attend the July meeting might just see it demonstrated there! (Ed. Note: Here’s a hint – think of IMS, portable IFE player, content/services-on-demand, wireless applications, green vegetables….and you may have the answer)
