I think when they imply hardware it's more the circuit-boards n wireing connecting the variuos componets DSP/FPGAs etc, because when they do the software programing on the gates they'r just manipulating the firmware attributes of another companies product ie TI/Intel/qualcom/altera whichever chipsets microcontrolers we'r using.
It does make one wonder how they achieved patents on the flashback recorder using said componets - IMO it was an established concept and once created in reality it used ti-dsps/intel parts vi micro OSi and these cross-licensing may be setting the eVU up to be a patented PMP as a whole vs a concept with its internal circuitry, patented OS and novel encription which will allow multi codec-drm usage or the ability to completely lock-out all others as the patent states and maybe somehow lock-up linux ...
all speculation on my part.... but with them mentioning H.26/WMV-DRM it could actually also make these codecs more effecient and secure. Since the said the'll give WMV a try on nex-gen that implies to me we're still using divx n their drm.
