Apple iPhone OS Passes Win Mobile

Apple's iPhone has taken away Microsoft's No. 2 position in mobile operating systems, according to a report.

Cupertino, California, Apple grabbed almost 9 million users in October for its mobile operating system for iPhones, edging out Microsoft's Windows Mobile at just over 7 million, according to data confirmed Thursday from researcher comScore.

It took Microsoft nearly a decade to build up its clunky mobile operating system and only a few short years for the maker of sleek devices and software to steal it away.
Apple's operating system trails only RIM's BlackBerry OS, which holds the throne at No. 1 with nearly 15 million users. The No. 4 spot went to Palm with about 2.8 million users, followed by Symbian with about 1.3 million and Google's Android with 1 million.

comScore reported that about 36 million people use a smart phone in the United States, compared with about 196 million who use ordinary mobile phones.
