The product is already developed. Why abandon it when you can target new markets with it?
The are not spending more money on it, in fact, they have cut their overhead.
They have apparently done trials and come up short but recognize what is needed to get it done as they are still targeting them with the new platform version of their product. Certainly they have been on a learning curve and see an opening.
