My guess was that it was merely a matter of expediting the process. They likely had agreed on a settlement number and to minimize complications, reduced the case to a single patent and then gave them cross licensing rights to the entire portfolio.

Had settlement not looked likely they probably would have taken them the distance with the entire portfolio.

The bottom line is that DM probably got what it wanted out of this round one infringer.
