Samsung Electronics will begin to market own-brand memory cards in the Taiwan market at the end of October with Transcend Information handling back-end packaging and distribution, according to industry sources in Taiwan. Samsung and Transcend are expected to make some announcement on October 20.
Both Samsung and Transcend declined to comment on the report.
Rumors have circulated since late 2007 that Samsung was looking to tap the Taiwan market with its own-brand memory cards, and could potentially compete with its Taiwan-based customers. The industry sources said that Samsung has now reached an agreement with Transcend to jointly market Samsung-brand memory cards in Taiwan.
Transcend will differentiate its memory cards and Samsung's, with the latter targeting the high-end market, the sources indicated.
Samsung is also believed to be likely to adopt its in-house developed memory cards for its future own-brand handset and digital camera products.
Samsung on September 28, 2009 issued a disclosure saying the company is considering absorbing Samsung Digital Imaging, its wholly-owned subsidiary that makes cameras. The Korea vendor earlier this year streamlined its businesses into two major groups - memory chips/LCD and digital media/telecommunications.
