For whatever reason this morning I was thinking about if and when Apple may ever be named as an infringer

Exactly, I have been thinking about it for years. However I have only been thinking of "when" ! Yes there was work with portalplayer and an insert the size of a quarter. It has been so long I don't recall all the details. If anyone can recall them it would be useful.
