In the meantime, I can imagine that DM has already looked to determine if there is prior art (maybe we should qualify that at relevant prior art) and whether or not EDIG's patents are unique / valid.

While I am not privy to the actual conversation, maybe RP was told that DM accepted the claim because of their research and discovery of 'no prior art', which he reported at the SHM and was passed on to this board. (This is pure speculation, of course.)
