"A more-recent Apple launch, the iPod nano, sold more than one million units in the 17 days after its introduction in August 2005; of course, it also cost $199, a lot less than an iPhone. (Most iPhones sold in the June quarter were the more-expensive $599 version, Apple said.) Nintendo sold 600,000 units of its $250 Wii videogame system in the first eight days of sales in the Americas. And a much lower-tech, cheaper product — the seventh “Harry Potter” book, with a cover price of $35 — sold 8.3 million copies in the first 24 hours. (I parsed that estimate in a recent post.) None of these products required wireless activation, a process that proved troublesome for some AT&T customers. Between that hiccup and people who chose not to activate their phones right away, AT&T reported 146,000 new activations over the first couple days, well below Apple’s initial sales estimate."
