Samsung claims first 1-Gbit DRAM for mobile apps

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Flexing its muscles on the mobile chip front, South Korea`s Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. unveiled a raft of products, including what the company claims is the world`s first 1-gigabit DRAM for mobile applications.

The 1-Gbit mobile DRAM product is geared for graphics-enhanced digital camcorders, as well as five megapixel and higher resolution digital still cameras.

The device operates at 664-megabytes per second and has been optimized to function at 1.8-volts in maximizing battery life through the use of Samsung proprietary partial array self refresh (PASR) and temperature compensated self refresh (TCSR) technologies, according to the company.

During an event in Taiwan, Samsung (Seoul) also rolled out several other products, such as a 300-MHz processor housed in a system-in-package (SiP) product, a 1-gigabit NAND flash memory, a 256-megabit mobile DRAM, a color display driver IC for active matrix OLEDs, a quad video graphics array (QVGA) resolution one-chip product, and a 2.5-inch thin-film-transistor, liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) for MP3 players.

The products are geared for mobile products, which themselves are moving towards a period of ``convergence,`` said Chang Gyu Hwang, president and CEO of Samsung Electronics` Semiconductor Business.

``The concept of customization is now being widely adopted by wireless system developers in an increasing commitment to make electronic devices more user-friendly and convenient,`` Hwang said in a statement. ``Mobile and digital consumer markets will take the lead in user-friendly convergence with IT mobilization not far behind.``
