March 17, 2005 – DELTA’S Song has issued a new IFE challenge to its US low-cost rivals with the announcement that it is introducing audio/video on demand to supplement its existing inflight live television offering.
All passengers are to have on-demand access to pay-per-view films, MP3 music and video games via Panasonic’s Ethernet-based eFX system and in-seat touchscreens. A selection of 10 films will cost $5 each, as will unlimited play on 11 games. A list of more than 1,600 songs will be available free of charge.
The eFX network, claimed to be the first example of the system to be installed by a US air carrier, also delivers 24 free channels of live DISH Network television programming and a popular interactive trivia game.
Song provides non-stop service between cities in the north-east USA and Florida leisure destinations, as well as Los Angeles, Atlanta, Las Vegas, San Juan and Nassau. The airline currently operates a fleet of 36 Boeing 757s fitted with 199 all-leather seats to provide more than 140 flights daily. It plans this year to add 12 aircraft and 18 round-trip flights and to introduce several new destinations, including San Francisco, Seattle and Aruba in the Caribbean.
