They are creating a primary memory from what?
"a non-volatile, long-term storage medium" ...or flash... preferably having an electrically controlled serial matrix (NAND)
Primary memory is normally a working memory such as DRAM...
They are displacing the normally associated primary memory with flash.
Can they wake up a dead flash formatted under their frame work and draw directly?
IMO...yes
Why would any one patent such a thing?
