What I have found that will change the color of my read messages is this: Instead of advancing to the next message by clicking on NEWER MESSAGES, I use the back arrow to take me back to the forum. Then I then click on the next message to read. Doing it this way will change the message color so it can be recognized as having been read. It is inconvenient, but works.
