BLURB
Nokia announced an intellectual licensing deal with GPS innovator Trimble. Under the agreement, Nokia will be able to use technology from Trimble's Global Navigation Satellite System patents. The deal is exclusive to Nokia for wireless consumer products and services. Nokia even has options to sublicense the technology.
Trimble in return will be able to use intellectual property within Nokia's location-based patents under a non-exclusive license. The deal by Nokia puts the company in a good position to offer GPS related products and services to wireless carriers in addition to sublicensing technology to other third parties.
GPS navigation systems are hot right now. By securing this intellectual property early, Nokia assures it is ahead of the game when it comes to offering solutions based on the technology. The sublicensing rights also open up an additional revenue stream for the company.
