NEW YORK, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Bankrupt Delta Air Lines Inc. (DALRQ.PK: Quote, Profile, Research) on Wednesday said it will offer in-flight entertainment on every seat on some domestic flights, in a move that it hopes will give it an edge on transcontinental routes.
Atlanta-based Delta, which completes its first year in bankruptcy on Sept. 14, said it will offer passengers on-demand movies, live television, music and games on sets installed on both economy and first-class seats.
Better entertainment options on long flights may help the airline stand out in the competitive market, but other carriers have also come up with similar plans.
Discount carrier JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU.O: Quote, Profile, Research) already offers similar services on its flights. Virgin America, which hopes to fly domestic routes by next year, also plans to offer in-flight entertainment options. Even Delta used to offer such entertainment in its now closed discount Song unit.
Delta, the No. 3 U.S. airline, said the product will first be unveiled on its fleet of 48 former Song Boeing 757s on domestic, transcontinental flights from New York and Atlanta.
By 2008, the airline said it will offer the service on more than 100 aircraft in its fleet. Delta also said that it will expand the service to its international flights in the future.
