Wencor bought exclusive rights to market the digE to the aircraft industry. I believe we know this to be fact; that APS had contracted these rights and, with the acquisition, Wencor acquired those rights. Further (re: is EDIG ``replaceable``?), I strongly suspect that these rights/obligations are mutually exclusive, i.e., APS/Wencor could not pursue/use another source for the device. I would find it very hard to believe that EDIG entered an agreement with one sided exclusivity.
The digEplayer, as you subtly point out, is THE device that the studios approved. Almost certainly the, or some of the, security features in the digE were developed by EDIG and patented or have patents pending. I would find it very difficult to believe that Boyer`s Intel cohort developed any aspect of the security features (though he may have conceptualized something based on what he knew was available/possible based on the works of others, including EDIG). If that Intel person had the abilities for which you or ``some`` seem to give credit, I doubt he would have wasted those skills on some idea with such limited (initial) application as Boyer`s IFE. He, with his Intel hat on, would have been dealing with much bigger ``names`` than Boyer/APS.
Also, as stated by EDIG, EDIG ``owns`` all technical (not cosmetic) aspects of the device.
As for buying the wrong company, Wencor COULD buy APS with relative ease. Could they have bought EDIG with such ease? (or would such a thing have even been feasible?). And why buy EDIG? All they were interested in was the digE. By buying APS (and its agreements with EDIG), they in essense bought EDIG, but only the EDIG product they were interested in.
Now where is our FAA approval of the installed system? I suspect it entered the ``process`` no later than the point in time when it was announced, possibly much sooner, possibly a little later. What`s it been, nearly four months plus a week since it was announced/shown at WAEA?
I have high hopes that there is pent-up demand for the installed version. As I believe we all agree, Wencor bought in for something, and it wasn`t just SilkAir and their 100 units. But that`s the only deal (that we know of) that has been made since the acquisition. Hate being at the mercy of a Gov`t agency....
