For the most part it`s about power consumption...Low-power SDRAM, combined with flash for an MCP(multi-chip package) has been the mainstay for some time now...The RAM is needed as a work space in conjunction with the flash.
PSRAM`s(2004) is a hybrid of DRAM type architecture...offering higher performance and lower cost... replacing the typical SRAM for MCP.
MOS does not utilize RAM as work space memory....it utilizes...a cache sized to the read/write block only of the flash...while utilizing a work space within the flash for the proprietary operations of MOS. This work space is not utilized in the same manner that RAM is used for MCP configurations...as data modification and creation is handled differently.
e.Digital offers a lower cost alternative than MCP...with less power consumption than MCP.
