This whole thing reminds me of when the US was in Baghdad and they had one of the Iraqi Generals being interviewed on CNN. There were US tanks rolling in the background, you could hear US planes flying overhead and you saw US troops on the ground but the General kept insisting that Baghdad was still under Iraqi control.
