Looks like a neat little car. But the e-Golf with some key parameters which I would consider when looking at an e-car are the following: range, charging time, and speed in that order of priority. Price is not that crutial, but @ $44k a car for short range is a bit pricey. A Tesla is more pricey, but the range is much better (almost 500km, thanks to a larger size battery pack...Well, "you get what you pay for" as the saying goes).
- range: ~130km, which may be good enough for Europe, but not enough for North America. You will need fast charging stations along the way. Question: Is the charging rate limited by the charging system design (to 7.2kW)?
- Charging time: ~3.5 hrs from a 240v x 30Amps system, still too long (limited by the current battery design).
- Speed: anything over 100km/hr would be acceptable, keeping in mind that this is no racing car.
One good thing to note is they selected the Li-ion batteries made by Panasonic. That means there would be good demand for high quality graphite.
Thanks for digging this up. Good stuff.
