Mauritania's presidential spokesman said Wednesday that renegade army officers have staged a coup and are holding the northwestern African country's president and prime minister.

President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi is being held at the presidential palace in the capital of Nouakchott, spokesman Abdoulaye Mamadouba said.

The spokesman said soldiers also detained Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waqef.

The move reportedly came after the president fired the country's top four military officials, including army chief of staff Gen. Mohamed Ould Sheikh Mohamed. No official reason was given for the firings announced early Wednesday.
