Eco-Log drives to class honours at the MPG Marathon
20 October 2008

New technology that shows drivers exactly how driving style affects fuel consumption and CO2 emissions has demonstrated class-leading performance in this year’s MPG Marathon.

Fuel and emissions specialists Lysanda fitted its innovative Eco-Log system to an otherwise standard 180 PS Volvo S40 D5 saloon and entered it into the annual economy challenge. Fuel economy and emissions data was transmitted from the car every minute, stage by stage, via a live feed to websites covering the marathon.

Feather-footed driving skills resulted in an average 56.32mpg for the two-day event – enough to secure the 160+g/km class honours for best fuel consumption and a 24% improvement over the manufacturer’s official combined cycle figure of 45.6mpg.

The car also achieved a cut in emissions of 21% in comparison to official figures, resulting in an average of 130g/km CO2 – enough to comply with proposed tough new EU legislation due to come into force in 2012. Under the new rules car manufacturers will be required to meet an average 130g/km CO2 target across their vehicle range.

Keeping a close eye on progress during the 411-mile challenge, via Eco-Log’s on-board display, were the car’s drivers – ex-Top Gear presenter Chris Goffey and Lysanda’s Sales Manager David Coates.

Simon Harris, Marketing Director at Lysanda, said: “We wanted to participate in a road trial under independently supervised conditions purely as an exercise in demonstrating the accuracy and validity of the Eco-Log technology. It also enabled us to run a side-by-side comparison with other vehicles and gather valuable data of how the system works in typical driving conditions.

“More importantly, we demonstrated how the technology can be used by fleet managers to monitor driver behaviour and showed the savings that can be made with a few simple techniques.”

The MPG Marathon, sponsored by ALD Automotive and the brainchild of Fleet World Magazine, champions fuel efficient vehicles and driving techniques and is divided into categories for cars and commercial vehicles according to CO2 output.

In the 160+g/km class, Lysanda’s Volvo was up against a Mini Cooper John Cooper Works, Kia Sportage, Lexus IS250, Mazda CX-7, Ssangyong Rexton, Subaru Impreza and a Chevrolet Corvette.

“Eco-Log will be of particular interest to fleet managers concerned with reducing fuel costs – both for passenger cars or commercial vehicles – as the system can be fitted to most production vehicles without any modification,” added Simon.

“It’s a system that could work across company cars, vans, trucks, buses and coaches and, of course, the savings and benefits increase with fleet size.”

Telematics provider WebTech Wireless plans to include Lysanda’s software in their next generation of telematics units.
