Managing fleets digitally - Part IV

Published in Western Canada Highway News:
Shaw Tracking, owned by giant Shaw Communications, offers a wide range of products and services for the transport industry. A recent addition to their lineup is Maptuit Navigo, a real-time in-cab navigation service that utilizes GPS technology and a map database of truck-approved routes. It can save drivers a lot of time on the road and therefore save fleet owners a lot in fuel expenses – which is especially important now that fuel costs are the No. 1 expense in the trucking industry, Shaw Tracking business services vice-president Mike Ham says from Mississauga.
The worldwide web is the key to fleet management software’s future, Virtual Dispatch’s Januszewski says, and it’s easy to see why. Data can be sent instantaneously via the Internet, and communications and tracking have become faster and easier as, perhaps ironically, technology has become more sophisticated and complex.
New or upgraded software is being released all the time in a competitive marketplace of products and services for those whose job it is to process shipping orders, dispatch vehicles, track fleet units and oversee the financials of trucking. In the short time this article was being researched, for instance, Skywave Mobile introduced its SureLinx 8100c Satellite/GPRS terminal for transportation and logistics managers, and WebTech Wireless launched its MDT2000CE mobile data platform.
It’s a rapidly evolving world out there, promising greater efficiencies and profitability for the fleet owners who keep up with it.
