Live CO2 broadcast from entry in MPG Marathon
30 September 2008

An innovative new way of measuring a vehicle’s fuel consumption and CO2 emissions is to be demonstrated during this year’s MPG Marathon economy run on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th October 2008.

Eco-Log is a system developed by emissions specialists Lysanda that reports results in real time.

The company, working with Canadian Telematics expert WebTech Wireless, will show how their Eco-Log can be used as a tool to help drivers instantly improve their fuel economy by 20% or more and monitor CO2 emissions on the move.

Fitted to an otherwise standard Volvo S40 D5 saloon and transmitting data every minute, stage by stage, via a live feed to websites covering the marathon, Eco-Log can identify where and how driver behaviour affects vehicle performance. The Volvo will be driven by ex-Top Gear presenter Chris Goffey and David Coates, Sales Manager of Lysanda, and competing in the class for cars at 160g/km of CO2 and over.

Simon Harris, Marketing Director at Lysanda, said: “We are entering our vehicle into the marathon as an exercise in demonstrating the practical application of the Eco-Log system. The results it produces will be of particular interest to anyone concerned with reducing fuel costs – both for passenger cars or commercial vehicles – as the system can be fitted to most production vehicles without any modification.”

Eco-Log gathers data about the way a car is being operated while in use. This information can be displayed to the driver or transmitted back to a fleet management company, where operators can identify in real time the actual level and composition of the vehicle’s emissions and mpg.

“It’s a system that could work across company cars, vans, trucks, buses and coaches and, of course, the savings and benefits increase with fleet size,” added Simon.

David Jephcott, Head of WebTech in Europe, said: “The MPG Marathon is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate our ‘Telematics for the Planet’ initiatives, which are aimed directly at reducing vehicle emissions. This will have major implications for fleet managers as well as vehicle manufacturers who are looking to lower operating costs and meet the demand for greener vehicles.”

The MPG Marathon is sponsored by ALD Automotive and is the brainchild of Fleet World Magazine. It champions fuel efficient vehicles and driving techniques and is divided into categories for cars according to CO2 output, with separate classes for petrol and diesel models, plus commercial vehicles.

Prizes will be awarded to individual class winners and the most efficient vehicle overall, as well as the driver that delivers the most improvement in percentage terms over their car’s official combined cycle fuel economy figures during the 400-mile journey.
