jjissel: I tend to agree with your last sentence.

The Santa Fe pit major axis is in an NW/SE direction. KR-1 is NW of the pit but they gave no distance. Most of the action has been in the SE part of the pit. KR-1 may just have been a feeler to check the extension in that direction. As you say, time will tell.
