European and US Heads of State Visit Argentina:
A sign that Argentina is being accepted back into the international fold
February 19, 2016
Italian Prime Minister Renzi wrapped up a two-day visit to Argentina earlier this week.
Prime Minister Renzi and President Macri vowed to re-launch bilateral relations and discussed Italian interest in participating in the energy sector - in oil and gas, as well as in renewable energy - in transport, and in technology in Argentina. Ties with Italy are important from a cultural perspective since about 40% of Argentine families emigrated from Italy. In addition, many small Italian investors bought Argentine bonds that have been in default, and stand to be paid 150% of their original investment if Argentina's settlement offer to bond-holders is accepted. On February 5th, Argentina made an offer to settle with the "hold-out" bond-holders for US$6.5 billion. Two of the six main bondholders are reported to have accepted the offer and negotiations continue with the other four.
French President will arrive in Argentina on a state visit next week.
President Hollande is visiting Peru, Argentina and Uruguay with the aim of promoting trade, investment and French interests in the region. The French delegation is reported to include more than one hundred industry and financial leaders. The visit is consistent with President Hollande's stated commitment to strengthen relations with Latin America and the Caribbean.
President Obama will be undertaking a state visit to Argentina on March 23 and 24.
"The coming visit of President Barack Obama is irrefutable proof of what we have said all along: Argentina is reinserting itself in the world," said Argentina's Foreign Minister. The agenda to be discussed by the two leaders is said to include investment and trade, particularly in the areas of renewable energy, agriculture, tourism and research and development.
