The Sendai 2 reactor, the second reactor to be restarted in Japan after all plants were idled as a consequence of the Fukushima tragedy, started delivering electricity to the national grid October 21 and reached full power output last night. And another reactor, Ikata 3, took a step closer to being the third reactor to restart in Japan.
The approval process achieved for the Ikata 3 reactor has been as follows:
July, 2015: Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) cleared the reactor for restart;
Subsequent approval by the Ikata prefecture;
October 6, 2015: unanimous approval by the Ikata town assembly;
October 22, 2015: approval by the mayor of Ikata town; and
October 26, 2015: approval from the governor of the adjacent Ehime prefecture.
This string of recent approvals for the Ikata 3 reactor clears the way for the rector to be Japan's third to come back on-line after the Fukushima tragedy.
The NRA recently approved the operational safety plans for the Takahama 3 and 4 reactors on August 4th and October 9th respectively - a significant step forward towards their restart. These reactors are on schedule to be Japan's 4th and 5th reactors to go back on-line. A court injunction that has blocked the restart of the reactors since April, 2015, is scheduled to be reviewed before February 2016.
