Did the U.S. Gov't really confiscate ALL its citizen's gold in the 1930's?

Does anyone know how true this is? Gosh, I can't now find the reference, but I had heard that the U.S. government was relatively unsuccessful in its efforts to confiscate its citizens' gold. And, that gold hording was more popular than giving it up to the authorities.
Anybody know what really happened?
