I heard an idea with regard to important paperwork the other day. If you have scanning ability on your computer, you can scan all your important documents and transfer the scans to a portable drive and lock it up in a safe deposit box. This provides a good backup for the hard copies.

It would probably be a good idea to delete the scans from your computer then for security purposes.
