Hasn't gold, on the average, increased about 18% per year over the last 8 years?

Hasn't gold outperformed the Dow and S&P over the last year? Something like a positive 8% compared to a negative 40% or so?

Didn't the price of gold have a major downturn in the early 1970's just before it sky rocketed over 800% to it's all time inflation adjusted high in 1980?
