Player, small points in this discussion. This wikkipedia site lists
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Officia...
the Eurozone as having 10,911 tonnes to the US's 8,133 tonnes, but the rest of the list is as you describe it. Maybe your reference did not add all the eurozone members, or uses a differnet membership criteria for the eurozone?
In any case, yes, the US has massive gold reserves (on paper) compared to individual european countires. It may be second to the EU as a whole, however.
I was shocked to see that Canada has bugger all!!! 78th or 80th on whichver list! We are very vulnerable. Less than mongolia? Less than Macendonia?
That got me wondering about how much gold we once had:
"Finance ministry figures released on Monday (January 2002) showed that the government sold 83,399 ounces of gold in December, leaving its holdings at about 599,000 ounces. That is down from some 21 million ounces in 1980 before the gold sales started. " Taken from: http://www.ratical.org/ratville/CAH/...
So we have only about 1/40th of what we had in 1980? Criminal! The whole point of havign reserves is to keep the ship afloat when all bets are off. Having only 3 tones today, is like having a life-boat made of concrete with holes drilled in the sides and the bottom (because you'll never need to use it).
That article on JPM begs the question, arent there billiosn being lost in such an attack? Is this bailout money?
And Player, if we both play nicely, we can have better discussions. It's all in the presentation, eh? Nice to see you not provoking... Almost as if you like it here better than at SH?
And I respond in kind.
