I feel like I've slipped into a parallel universe where everything happens back to front... when I raise my concerns everyone thinks I'm mad... but I think they're mad as well...

If you swapped all the currency for Monopoly money do you think people would still keep taking it or would the penny then drop (i.e. that it's all a confidence trick)?
