Pumpers and Bashers

posted on Mar 28, 2008 08:59AM

When bulletin boards first evolved it was a fairly civil community with an unwritten code of ethics that ruled the ether. As a newbie, I recall a time when I posted something which seemed like a blatent pump and I got slammed down hard by everyone on the forum. It wasn't a pump, just exubberance.

Back then the boards were a great place to discuss facts and interest of the said company. Most posters were positive on the company or they probably would't be holding it. When a company hit hard times then sentiment turned less favorable. A lot of venting but still mostly thoughtful and interesting discussions. At all times did posters present arguments and questions about the company, the stock, the market and the economy that were discussable and presented all sides without being censured for their opinion. Of course some discussions became heated.

However, in good time investors realized the power of the pump and began to blatently pump their stocks on the boards. Dissenting opinions became unwelcome. Then the bashers appeared, perhaps bitter that they sold out early and trying to get the price down to re-enter or perhaps agents of shorters. However the boards became a far less friendly forum for discussion and more of an adversarial war between pumpers and bashers.

It's really just a reflection what society has become. Thinking and debate have given way to an oversimplified playground mentality where everything is reduced to black and white diametrics.

Earlier in the week I wrote a few things that were tongue in cheek but obviously not the same opinion of a few on the board. Suddenly, I found my  "rating" had dropped to a lowly 2.8. So someone dissagrees with my opinion so I'm now a poor contributor?  I believe I wrote the original posting of the "reasons to invest in Tyhee" about a year ago and I've contributed more than most posters to the forum here and on stockhouse. However, I guess I don't always post the right opinion.

I didn't have an issue with Eggs yesterday. Perhaps he had too many redbulls. He was agressive. He sent me what I thought was an agressive pm as well but that didn't change my over-all opinion of him. He's been a decent contributor. Sometimes I've read postings that I don't agree with here, but if I think they are well thought out I still give that poster a good rating for his contribution.

There is nothing wrong with exubberance. I am very bullish on TDC as I am for other stocks. However, I hope this is a forum that can be more like the forums used to be; where we can have healthy debate welcoming and appreciating all opionions.
