"Safety" of these ultras depends on the volatility of the underlying stocks. The higher the volatility, the worse these instruments do over time. That's the main reason the gold & energy ultras do so poorly.
I do trade them once in a while, but only as a day or short term swing trade. I think it's hard enough to get the direction right, but if you have to worry about volatility as well.....
