DeBeers, through their cartel, has the world conditioned to believe that clear, transparent diamonds are the most valuable (because that is what DeBeers markets) but clear, transparent diamonds are the most common and thus should be the least valuable. Some of the coloured gemstones are much more rare and thus are more valuable, like pinks, yellows, browns and the very rare blues. I'm not talking about sandpaper quality diamonds. I'm talking about gemstones. So when you say that SNO tells you that brown diamonds are not worth much you really have to put that statement into context.
Although, I would be very happy to see lots of clear, white gemstones since that is what will attract DeBeers into offering a nice, fat stock price but that's only becuase, like them, I'm in this for the pay off.
Just for interest, here is a site that talks about brown diamond gemstones.
