What has made Snap Lake a mine? Is it the 1.2 carats per ton, the average $144/carat valuation and the 22 million ton ore body. Or is it the knowledge that larger diamonds will be found? I believe it's the latter that makes the difference. This is what makes a diamond mine valuable and extremely profitable.
It appears that the Mud Lake deposit has something special going for it and DeBeers recognized that several years ago. Not only might it have large diamonds but it has many other advantages including location. Thus the mining costs will be lower and the profitablility greater, even at a lower overall grade.
But, I hope we have some of those big stones because that is what will make the real difference. IMHO
