First Ever Virgin Festival Calgary Kicks Ass!
Virgin Festival entertains over 35,000 screaming music fans at Fort
Calgary
CALGARY, June 23 /CNW/ - The summer solstice sun has set, the largest
mobile stage in North America is being packed up and the word is out:
Calgary's first Virgin Festival kicked off summer with a killer weekend of
music and experiences that blew everyone away. On June 21 and 22, more than
35,000 music lovers came to Fort Calgary to experience Canada's ultimate
summer music festival.
"We would have raised the roof if there had been one!" said Nathan
Rosenberg, chief marketing officer of Virgin Canada. "The first Virgin
Festival took over Fort Calgary and kicked some serious ass. With two jam
packed days, more than 35,000 screaming fans, 2 killer stages, 30 amazing
acts, 4 inflatable horses and one gigantic used beer cup sculpture, we threw a
party we hope people will never forget."
Day one highlights included Brit rockers The Fratellis' acoustic set, the
unbelievable Flaming Lips performance and the reunited Stone Temple Pilots.
Day two highlights included art-punkers Constantines, indie pop rockers Stars
and rock legends The Tragically Hip - topped off with two unexpected guest
performances by Gord Downie with Constantines and City and Colour.
Andrew Bridge, director of Virgin Festival Canada said, "While music is
at the heart of every festival, the on-site experience is the soul of a Virgin
Festival! Virgin Mobile Angels roamed the Fort making sure everyone was taken
care of and new singing sensations were unearthed in the Oh Henry! Rock
Garage. If singing wasn't your style, you could dance up a storm with Xbox and
Dance Dance Revolution or get your favourite body part pierced."
"The Festival also goes way beyond sunshine, music and good times,"
continued Bridge. "More than $35,000 was raised for Virgin Unite Canada,
meaning we can continue to work to create immediate, tangible change in the
lives of people around the world who need it most, including here in Calgary."
Another top priority was looking after the environment and making sure
the historic Fort Calgary site was left in tip-top shape. On-site recycling
and composting, biodegradable cups and containers and human-powered mobile
phone charging stations were just some of the steps taken to keep the Festival
lean and green.
