torches and pitchforks

here is another reason the odds are against a deflationary depression: the civil unrest it would cause. these are some real life examples of rough justice being handed out, from david galland of casey research.

Torches and Pitchforks

As flailing banks and near bankrupt corporations are lining up for a scoop from the bailout trough while Main Street increasingly feels the noose of rising unemployment, shrinking credit, and dwindling assets tighten, some of the most desperate (or hot-headed) parts of the populace have started taking matters into their own hands.
In September, Lalit Kishore Choudhary, the CEO of the Indian Operations of an Italian car parts manufacturer, was killed by an angry mob after massive layoffs. The quite obviously disgruntled workers bludgeoned to death the chief executive who had fired them from a factory in a suburb of Delhi.

Just a few weeks later, in early October, the CEO of failed investment giant Lehman Bros., Richard Fuld, got a close-up impression of the public’s outrage in the form of a fellow gym member who felt Fuld deserved a good punch in the face. Posts on Internet message forums discussing the incident ranged from open schadenfreude to colorful scenarios of what should have happened to Fuld instead of just getting smacked.

And in the latest news from Japan, this week unknown perpetrators stabbed a former vice health minister and the wife of another, who were both tied to Japan’s ailing pension system. The murders “followed a series of scandals involving pensions and health care for Japan’s rapidly aging population, including the mishandling of millions of pension records,” reported the International Herald Tribune. Police has now tightened security for Japanese officials.

Will there be a time when the world’s CEOs and politicians won’t be able to step in front of their door anymore without a battalion of armored bodyguards? If the first incidents are any indication of things to come, this time might arrive sooner rather than later.
