Thanks for the replies. I would tend to think there has been a large (naked) short position since the volume, even before the general financial meltdown, always seemed a bit large for a company w/ so few shares and so many held by strong hands. If I remember, one poster accounted for about half the float between himself and those he knew. Since the meltdown, of course, several large investors supposedly have had to sell, probably to raise cash.
On the other hand, I would have thought the conversion of Dicut shares would have smoked out the naked shorts. One of the tactics I have heard of for companies to get rid of naked shorts is to re-issue shares. They only issue the correct amount of shares, of course, so anyone holding shares originating as naked shorts are left out. Maybe they have to re-issue shares in a certain way to achieve that. Also, any shorts who haven't covered at this price and with production imminent are nuts.
